Cylinder Volume Calculator

Type a width and a height and get the cylinder's volume straight away: liters first, then US gallons and cubic units. It suits tanks, pots, cans, drums and carboys, in millimeters, centimeters, meters, inches or feet.

How to Use This Cylinder Volume Calculator

  1. Under Width is the, pick Diameter (the full width) or Radius (half of it).
  2. Choose your Unit: Millimeters (mm), Centimeters (cm), Meters (m), Inches (in) or Feet (ft).
  3. Enter the Diameter (or Radius) and the Height.
  4. Read the big Volume in liters. The pills below show US gallons and the volume in cubic units of your unit.

There is no button to press: the result updates as you type.

Cylinder Volume Formula With Diameter and Height

The volume of a cylinder is V = π × r² × h, where r is the radius and h is the height. If you only know the diameter, the radius is half of it, so V = π × (d ÷ 2)² × h.

The calculator converts your measurements to centimeters, finds the volume in cubic centimeters, and divides by 1,000 to get liters.

Cylinder Volume in Liters and Gallons

One liter is 1,000 cubic centimeters, and one cubic meter is 1,000 liters. The gallon figure uses the US liquid gallon (3,785.41 mL), the one printed on most American tanks and jugs. For a UK gallon, divide the liters by 4.546.

That makes this a quick round tank volume calculator: measure across and up the tank, and the total capacity in liters or gallons appears.

Diameter or Radius: Which Should You Enter?

Use the one you measured. A tape across the top of a barrel gives the diameter; a compass or a pipe spec sheet often gives the radius. Mixing them up is the usual mistake, because the radius is squared and an error in it gets multiplied. Flip Width is the to match what you have in hand.

What It Does Not Do

The result is the volume of the whole cylinder, meaning its full capacity. It does not work out a partly filled tank, volume at a given liquid level, cones or spheres.

Cylinder Volume Calculator FAQ

How do I calculate the volume of a cylinder from diameter and height?

Halve the diameter to get the radius, square it, multiply by pi, then multiply by the height. With the Width is the toggle on Diameter, you can skip the halving: type the diameter and the height and the calculator does it. A 50 cm wide, 100 cm tall cylinder holds about 196.35 liters.

How do I find cylinder volume in liters?

Work in centimeters: 1,000 cubic centimeters is 1 liter. The big Volume figure is already in liters whatever unit you pick, so a drum measured in inches or feet needs no extra conversion.

How many gallons does a cylinder hold?

The US gallons pill shows it. The calculator uses the US liquid gallon of 3,785.41 mL, so a 24 in wide, 36 in tall tank comes out at about 70.50 gallons. A UK (imperial) gallon is larger, so divide the liters by 4.546 instead if you need those.

Should I enter the radius or the diameter?

Whichever you measured. Diameter is the full width across the circle; radius is half of that. Switch Width is the between Diameter and Radius and the field name changes with it. Entering a diameter where a radius was expected makes the answer four times too big.

Can it work out how much liquid is in a partly filled tank?

No. It gives the volume of the whole cylinder, which is the tank's full capacity. It does not calculate a partial fill or capacity from a liquid level. Cones and spheres are not covered either.

What units can I use?

Millimeters (mm), Centimeters (cm), Meters (m), Inches (in) and Feet (ft). The Unit select starts on centimeters or inches depending on your region. Alongside liters and US gallons, a pill shows the volume in cubic units of the unit you chose, such as in³ or m³.

Why does it show a dash or say Enter a number greater than 0.?

A dash means a field is empty or not a valid number. The message appears when a value is 0 or negative, since a cylinder needs a positive width and height.
