Online Stopwatch with Laps
This online stopwatch with laps times anything from a quick task to a long session. The clock reads hours, minutes, seconds and hundredths of a second, and every lap is saved with its split and total time. There are no settings to set up: press Start and go.
How to use the stopwatch
The clock opens at 00:00:00.00, ready to count up.
- Press Start. The clock runs and the buttons change to Lap and Stop.
- Press Lap whenever you want to mark a point. The clock keeps running.
- Press Stop to freeze the time. The buttons change to Reset and Start.
- Press Start again to carry on from where you stopped, or Reset to clear the time and every lap.
Laps, splits and totals
Each lap adds a row to the list under the buttons, newest first, with three columns:
| Column | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Lap | The lap number, such as Lap 3. |
| Split | The time since the previous lap. For Lap 1 it is the time since you pressed Start. |
| Total | The time counted since you first pressed Start. Time while the clock is stopped is not counted. |
Use the Split column to compare one stretch with the next, such as running laps on a track, reps in a set or speeches in a round. Use Total to see how far through the session you are. The list has no limit on the number of laps.
Stop, resume and reset
Stop only pauses the clock; the laps stay on screen. Press Start to resume counting from the stopped time, so one session can be split into several bursts. Reset is the only button that clears things, and it clears the time and all laps together.
Why the time stays right in a background tab
Browsers slow down the timers of tabs you cannot see, which makes some online stopwatches run behind. This one does not count ticks. Every update reads the device clock and subtracts the moment you pressed Start, so switching tabs or minimizing the window cannot make it lose time.
Need thousandths of a second, a countdown or a log you can copy? The Precision Timer does that. For a timer that counts down to zero, try the Countdown Timer.
Frequently asked questions
What is an online stopwatch with laps?
An online stopwatch with laps is a stopwatch in your browser that can mark points in time without stopping the clock. Each lap is saved in a list with its split and total time, so you can compare one stretch against the next. This one shows hours, minutes, seconds and hundredths of a second.
How do I do multiple laps on a stopwatch?
Press Start, then press Lap each time you want to mark a lap. The clock keeps running and every press adds a new row to the list under the buttons, newest first. There is no limit on the number of laps.
What does lap mean on a stopwatch?
A lap is a marker saved while the clock keeps running. Pressing Lap does not stop or reset anything. It records how far the clock has got and adds a row such as Lap 3 to the list.
What is split time on a stopwatch?
Split time is the time since the previous lap. In the lap list it is the Split column. The Total column is different: it is the time counted since you first pressed Start, so the last Total always matches the main clock at the moment of that lap.
Can I stop the stopwatch and carry on counting?
Yes. Press Stop to freeze the clock, then press Start and it resumes from where it stopped. Your laps stay in the list. Press Reset only when you want to clear the time and all laps.
Is there a stopwatch with centiseconds?
Yes. The clock reads 00:00:00.00, which is hours, minutes, seconds and centiseconds (hundredths of a second). The same precision is used for every split and total in the lap list.
Does the stopwatch stay accurate in a background tab?
Yes. It reads the device clock every time it updates instead of counting its own ticks, so a hidden tab or a minimized window does not make it fall behind. The time is correct when you come back.
Is this online stopwatch free?
Yes. It is free, has no account and nothing to install. It runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
