Calories Per Dollar Calculator
This calories per dollar calculator divides the calories in an item or meal by what it costs, so you can see how many calories each dollar buys. Type the Total Calories and the Total Price and the answer updates on every keystroke. Nothing you type is uploaded or stored.
How to Calculate Calories Per Dollar
- Type the calories for the whole item or meal under Total Calories. Whole numbers only.
- Type what it costs, in total, under Total Price. Decimals are fine, and a decimal comma works too:
3,99is read as 3.99. - Read the big number under Calories Per Dollar. The unit beside it, such as cal per $, uses your region's currency symbol.
There is no button to press. Change either field and the result follows. The number is rounded to a whole
number, except below 10, where it keeps one decimal, for example 2.5.
Total Price: 8.00
Calories Per Dollar = 1,200 ÷ 8.00 = 150 cal per $
The Calories Per Dollar Formula
Calories per dollar = total calories ÷ total price. Both numbers are for the whole thing you are buying, not one serving, so a 6-pack of 200-calorie bars for 5.40 is 1,200 ÷ 5.40 = 222 calories per dollar. Enter the price you actually pay, including any tax or delivery fee you want counted.
Comparing Two Items by Calories Per Dollar
The calculator handles one item at a time and does not keep a list, so to compare, enter the first item, note the result, then enter the second. The item with the larger number gives more calories for the same money.
Item B: 1,500 calories for 9.50 = 158 cal per $
Item B buys more calories per dollar, even though it costs more in total.
Cost Per Calorie Instead
Prefer to see the price of each calorie? It is the same division turned upside down: cost per calorie = price ÷ calories, or 1 ÷ the calories-per-dollar result. For a result of 150, one calorie costs about 0.0067, which is roughly 0.67 per 100 calories. Because both views use the same two numbers, a higher calories-per-dollar figure always means a lower cost per calorie.
Using Any Currency
The calculation never converts money, so the result is the same whether the price is in dollars, euros, pounds or yen. Only the unit label changes with your region, for example cal per € or cal per ¥. Keep to one currency when you compare items.
When You See a Dash
- The result shows a dash and the message Fill in the calories and price below when a field is empty, zero or not a valid number.
- Check the price first. A Total Price of zero cannot be divided into, so the calculator waits until both fields are above zero.
Pairing this with other numbers? The Recipe Scaler resizes a recipe to the servings you are cooking, the BMR Calculator estimates the calories your body uses at rest, the Beer Calorie Calculator works out the calories in a drink, and the Cost Per Wear Calculator applies the same price-divided-by-use idea to clothes.
This is arithmetic on the numbers you enter, not diet, nutrition or health advice. Calories per dollar says nothing about how nutritious an item is, how filling it is or whether it suits you.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you calculate calories per dollar?
Divide the total calories by the total price. A 1,200-calorie meal that costs 8.00 gives 1,200 ÷ 8.00 = 150 calories per dollar. Type the two numbers into Total Calories and Total Price and the calculator shows the answer as you type, rounded to a whole number.
How many calories per dollar is good?
There is no single number that counts as good, because it depends on what things cost where you shop and on what you are buying. The result only tells you how many calories each unit of money buys, so it is useful for comparing two items. It says nothing about nutrition, portion size or what suits you.
How do I calculate cost per calorie?
Divide the price by the calories, or work backwards from the result: cost per calorie is 1 ÷ calories per dollar. For the 150 result above that is about 0.0067 per calorie, or roughly 0.67 per 100 calories (100 ÷ 150).
What food has the most calories per dollar?
That depends on the store, the country and the day, so this page has no food list to rank. To find out for the items in front of you, enter each one's total calories and total price in turn and compare the Calories Per Dollar results: the larger number buys more calories for the same money.
Can I use this calories per dollar calculator in euros, pounds or yen?
Yes. The number is the same in any currency because it is just calories divided by price. The unit under the result follows your region, so it reads cal per $, cal per €, cal per £ or cal per ¥. Use one currency for the price, and a decimal comma such as 3,99 works too.
Why does the result show a dash instead of a number?
The calculator shows a dash and the message Fill in the calories and price below when a field is empty, zero or not a valid number. Dividing by a price of zero has no sensible answer, so it waits until both Total Calories and Total Price are greater than zero.
