Alphabetize a List Online
Alphabetize List is a free tool that lets you alphabetize a list online in one tap — paste your lines, sort them A-Z or Z-A, and copy the result. It handles the awkward parts for you: stray indentation, blank lines, mixed capitalisation, and repeated entries. Nothing is uploaded. The sorting happens inside your browser, so your list never leaves your device — no account, no sign-up, no app to install.
Paste your list into the box above with one item per line, then tap Sort list. The lines are alphabetized in place and the button turns into Copy to clipboard. Open Options to reverse the order, respect capitalisation, or strip duplicates.
Got a list that needs sorting? It takes one tap.
Use the free Alphabetize List →How to alphabetize a list online
The whole flow is one box and one button. There is no upload step and no waiting — the list is sorted the moment you tap, because the work happens on your own device.
- Open capsuletools.app/alphabetize-list/
- Paste or type your list into the box, one item per line
- Tap Sort list — the lines re-order alphabetically in place
- Tap Copy to clipboard and paste the sorted list wherever you need it
Before sorting, each line is trimmed of leading and trailing spaces and completely blank lines are dropped, so a list pasted out of a document or a spreadsheet comes back tidy rather than riddled with gaps. Edit the box at any time and the button flips back to Sort list so you can sort again. Lists of up to 100,000 lines are supported.

Sort options: A-Z, Z-A, ignore case & remove duplicates
The Options panel sits under the button and stays collapsed until you need it, so the common case — plain A-Z — never asks you a question. Change any option after sorting and the list re-sorts immediately, so what you see always matches the switches.
- Z-A order — sorts into reverse alphabetical order, Z first and A last. Useful for putting the end of a long index on top.
-
Ignore case — on by default.
apple,AppleandAPPLEare treated as the same word, and accented letters file next to their plain counterparts (Éclairsits besideeclair). Switch it off and every capitalised line is grouped ahead of every lowercase one, which is the strict computer-style ordering. - Remove duplicates — off by default. When on, identical lines collapse to a single entry and the tool reports how many it dropped. This is the quickest way to alphabetize and remove duplicates in one pass.
Your original text is kept in memory while you experiment, so switching Remove duplicates back off brings the repeated lines back rather than losing them for good.
Why use a browser-based list alphabetizer
Most people reach for a word processor or a spreadsheet to put a list in alphabetical order, and both make you work for it — a Word list has to be selected and pushed through a sort dialog, and a spreadsheet needs the list in a column before it will sort anything. Neither is convenient on a phone.
A sort list online free tool skips all of that: paste, tap, copy. Because this one runs entirely client-side, it also stays private — a guest list, a set of passwords-adjacent labels, or an unreleased product list is never transmitted anywhere. Add it to your home screen and it opens full-screen like an installed app, with no ads and no account.
Frequently asked questions
How do I alphabetize a list online?
Paste your list into the box with one item per line and tap Sort list. The lines are re-ordered A-Z in place and the button becomes Copy to clipboard. The sorting runs in your browser, so nothing is uploaded and no sign-up is needed.
How do I alphabetize a list and remove duplicates?
Open the Options panel below the Sort list button and switch on Remove duplicates, then sort. Repeated lines collapse to a single entry and a counter tells you how many were dropped. Switching the option back off restores the duplicates, because the tool keeps your original list in memory.
How do I alphabetize a list of names?
Paste one name per line and sort. The tool alphabetizes each line exactly as it is written, so “John Smith” files under J. To sort by surname, write the names as “Smith, John” before sorting. Ignore case is on by default, so inconsistent capitalisation will not scatter the list.
What is reverse alphabetical order?
Reverse alphabetical order runs from Z to A instead of A to Z, so “zebra” comes first and “apple” comes last. To get it here, open Options and switch on Z-A order. The list re-sorts straight away, with no need to tap Sort list again.
Is there a free app that will alphabetize a list?
Yes. Alphabetize List is free, has no ads and no account, and works in any modern browser on phone or desktop. You can also add it to your home screen from your browser's share menu, after which it opens full-screen and behaves like an installed app.
