How to check your spelling online for free
There is no button to press. Spelling is checked as you type:
- Type or paste your text into the box. Words the dictionary does not know get a red wavy underline.
- Tap a red word to see suggested spellings, then tap the one you want. It replaces just that word. If the dictionary has nothing close, the list says No suggestions.
- Tap Copy text to copy the whole text to your clipboard as plain text. The button turns to Copied when it has worked.
A line above the box counts the problems, for example 4 possible misspellings, or says No misspellings found when the text is clean. The box holds up to 50,000 characters. While the dictionary loads you will see Loading dictionary…; if it fails, tap Try again.
US English or UK English spell checker
The US English and UK English buttons at the top switch the dictionary. Use UK English as a British English spelling checker for colour, organise or travelling, and US English as an American English spell checker for color, organize or traveling. A word that is right in one dictionary can be flagged in the other, which is exactly what you want when you are writing for a particular audience. US English is selected when the page opens.
Why this spell checker never autocorrects
Autocorrect quietly rewrites names, product terms and slang into something else. Here, no word is ever changed on its own. A red underline is only a flag, and your text changes only when you tap a suggestion. Names and technical words the dictionary does not know stay as you typed them; you can simply leave them underlined.
Is my text private?
Yes. The dictionary files are downloaded once to your browser, and the checking runs on your device. Your text is not sent to a server, not stored and not logged. Closing or refreshing the page clears it, so copy the corrected text before you leave.
What a spell checker can and cannot catch
It finds words that are not in the dictionary, such as a typo like recieve or teh. It does not read grammar and cannot tell when a correct word is the wrong one, such as their for there, or form for from. Numbers and codes that contain digits are skipped, and single letters are never flagged. Only English is supported.

Does a spell checker check grammar too?
No. This one only checks whether each word is in the dictionary. It will not catch grammar mistakes or a real word used in the wrong place, such as there instead of their, so read your text through once more.
