List Randomizer: Shuffle Any List or Split It Into Groups

This free list randomizer (also called a list shuffler) shuffles any pasted list into a truly random order using your browser's built-in Web Crypto API — not the weaker Math.random() that most online shufflers rely on. Paste your list, tap Randomize, and copy the result. You can also split the shuffled list into any number of equal groups, for team assignments, classroom groups, or raffle draws.

How to Randomize a List

Paste or type your list into the box, one item per line. As you type, the label above the box counts how many items are ready. Tap Randomize and the list re-orders instantly — the button can be tapped again any time for a fresh shuffle of the same list. When you're happy with the order, tap Copy to clipboard to export it.

If your list isn't one item per line — a comma-separated list, or one pasted from a spreadsheet column with tab breaks — open Advanced and change the item delimiter to Comma or Tab before randomizing.

Why This List Randomizer Uses Cryptographically Secure Shuffling

Most "randomize a list" tools shuffle with Math.random(), a pseudo-random generator that isn't designed for fairness and can noticeably clump — the same few items drifting toward the same end of the list more often than true randomness would allow. This tool instead uses window.crypto.getRandomValues(), the same cryptographically secure randomness source browsers use for security-sensitive code, combined with a rejection-sampling step that removes the small bias plain modulo arithmetic would otherwise introduce. The result is a genuine Fisher-Yates shuffle where every possible order is equally likely.

Splitting a Shuffled List Into Random Groups

Switch Output Mode to Split into groups, open Advanced, and set the number of groups. Tapping Randomize shuffles the whole list first and then divides it into that many groups, labeled Group 1, Group 2, and so on. If the list doesn't divide evenly, the extra items are spread across the first groups one at a time rather than dumped into a single oversized group — a 10-item list split into 3 groups comes out 4/3/3, never 4/4/2.

Randomizing Lists of Names, Numbers, or Words

The randomizer doesn't care what a line contains — names, numbers, words, phrases, or product codes all shuffle identically, because each line is treated as one plain text item. That makes it equally suited to shuffling a guest list, randomizing the order of survey questions, drawing a random sequence of raffle numbers, or scrambling a word list for a classroom game.

A Free Random Group Generator for Classrooms and Teams

Splitting a shuffled list into groups is exactly what a random group generator does for teachers, coaches, or team leads — pick a class list or team roster, set the number of groups you need, and get fair, unbiased groupings in one tap. It works just as well for breakout groups, project teams, workout partners, or seating charts as it does for a classroom, with no account and no limit on how many times you reshuffle.

Frequently asked questions

How do I randomize a list of names?

Paste the names into the box above, one per line, and tap Randomize. The Web Crypto API shuffles them into a true random order instantly, and a Copy to Clipboard button lets you export the result. Nothing is uploaded — the shuffle runs entirely in your browser.

How do I split a long list into equal groups?

Switch Output Mode to Split into Groups, open Advanced, and set the number of groups you want. Tap Randomize and the shuffled list is divided into that many numbered groups, as evenly as possible — any items left over after an even split are spread across the first few groups rather than piled into one.

Can I randomize a list of numbers or words, not just names?

Yes — the tool treats every line as a plain text item, so numbers, words, phrases, or names all shuffle the same way. If your list uses commas or tabs instead of line breaks, open Advanced and change the item delimiter to match.

Is there a free random group generator for classrooms?

Yes. Paste a class list, switch to Split into Groups, set how many groups you need, and tap Randomize. It's free, has no account or sign-up, and works for any group size — teams, breakout groups, seating assignments, or raffle draws.

Does randomizing a list online keep my data private?

Yes. The shuffle happens entirely on your own device using your browser's built-in Web Crypto API — your list is never sent to a server, uploaded, or stored anywhere. Closing the tab clears it completely.
