How the true size comparison map works

Most maps you have ever seen lie about size. This tool fixes that the direct way: it lets you pick a country up and put it somewhere else, recalculating the outline for its new latitude as you drag. Nothing is scaled by eye — every point of the border is replayed at its true distance and bearing from the shape's centre, so the outline you drop on Africa is the same patch of ground you picked up in the Arctic.

  3. Drag the outline anywhere you like. Moving it toward a pole makes it grow on screen; moving it toward the equator makes it shrink
  4. Pinch or scroll to zoom, drag the empty map to pan, and use the gear button to change an outline's colour or clear the map

The country names people actually use are all recognised — search USA, UK, Holland, Ivory Coast or Burma and you will land on the right outline. 241 countries and territories are included, down to Malta and Singapore; if a country is too small to see at the current zoom, the map closes in on it automatically.

Why country size comparison maps distort reality

The world is a sphere and a screen is flat, so something has to give. The Mercator projection — used by virtually every web map — chooses to keep angles and local shapes correct, which is what makes it good for navigation. It pays for that with area.

The stretch is exactly 1 ÷ cos(latitude) in each direction, which means apparent area grows by roughly 1 ÷ cos²(latitude). At the equator there is no distortion at all. At 45° a country looks twice its area; at 60°, four times; at 75°, nearly fifteen times. That is the whole reason Greenland can sit next to Africa on a wall map and look like a fair fight.

This tool does not replace the projection — the base map is still Mercator, because that is the map everyone has in their head. It corrects the country instead, so you can measure the map against itself.

Comparing multiple countries at once

You are not limited to two shapes. Spawn as many countries as you want and each one gets its own colour and its own chip below the map — tap a chip to make that outline the active one, or tap its ✕ to remove it. The gear button next to the search box holds the colour swatches for the active outline and a Clear all outlines button when you want a fresh map.

There is no server involved. The country boundaries come from Natural Earth, the public-domain cartographic dataset, bundled with the page at 1:50m detail — so after the page loads there are no map-tile requests, no API calls and nothing to sign up for. The map is drawn on a canvas on your device, and the outline maths happens there too.


Frequently asked questions

Why is Greenland so big on the map?

Because almost every world map uses the Mercator projection, which stretches the map more and more the further you get from the equator. Greenland sits between about 60°N and 83°N, so it is drawn several times larger than its true size. Drag Greenland's outline down to the equator and it shrinks to roughly a quarter of its width — that smaller shape is the honest one.

Is Greenland really bigger than Africa?

No — Africa is about 14 times bigger. Africa covers roughly 30.4 million km² against Greenland's 2.17 million km². They look similar on a Mercator map only because Greenland is near the pole and Africa straddles the equator. Put both outlines on the map and drag Greenland onto Africa to see the real difference.

How big is Russia compared to other countries?

Russia is the largest country on Earth at about 17.1 million km² — roughly 1.7 times the United States or Canada, and about 11% of all the land on the planet. It still looks bigger than it is on a Mercator map, though: most of Russia lies above 50°N. Drag it south and it loses a surprising amount of bulk, while Africa stays about the same.

How does the USA compare in size to China?

They are almost the same size — around 9.6 to 9.8 million km² each, close enough that which one counts as larger depends on whether coastal waters and disputed territory are included. Because they sit at similar latitudes, a normal map already compares them fairly. Spawn both outlines and drag one over the other to see the overlap directly.

What is Mercator distortion?

The Mercator projection keeps compass directions and local shapes correct, which is why it became the standard for navigation and for web maps. The price is area: the map is stretched by a factor of 1 ÷ cos(latitude) in both directions, so a country's apparent area grows by roughly 1 ÷ cos²(latitude). At 60° that is four times too big; near the poles it runs away entirely.

How big is Africa really?

About 30.4 million km² — you could fit the United States, China, India and Western Europe inside it and still have room left over. Africa is drawn close to its true relative size on a Mercator map because it sits on the equator, which is exactly why everything at high latitude looks inflated next to it.
