Split Rent by Income Calculator

This split rent by income calculator works out what each person pays when one rent or bill is shared between people who earn different amounts. Enter the bill and each person's income, and choose whether everyone covers the same share of the bill as they earn of the income, or everyone ends up with the same amount left over. It works for rent, utilities and any other shared bill, in any currency. It is worked out on your device and nothing is uploaded or stored.

How to split rent by income, step by step

  1. Total expense - type the rent or bill to split.
  2. Income of person 1 and Income of person 2 - type each person's income. Everyone must use the same kind of figure: all gross, all net or all hourly.
  3. Add person - add up to 12 people. Each new row is Income of person 3, 4 and so on. The X beside a row removes that person, down to a minimum of 2.
  4. Split method - choose Proportional split or Equal remainder. Both are explained below.
  5. Who pays what - read each person's amount and their percent of the bill. The Total row always equals the bill.

There is no Calculate button: the results change on every keystroke. Amounts have no currency symbol, so type them in whatever currency you use.

Proportional split: the same share of the bill as of the income

With Proportional split, each person pays the same share of the bill as their share of the total income. Add up all the incomes, divide each person's income by that total, and multiply the bill by the result. Someone who earns twice as much as the other pays twice as much.

Example: rent 1,800, incomes 4,000 and 2,000
Total income: 6,000
Person 1: 4,000 ÷ 6,000 = 66.7% of the bill, 1,200
Person 2: 2,000 ÷ 6,000 = 33.3% of the bill, 600
Together: 1,800

Equal remainder: everyone is left with the same amount

Equal remainder works the other way round. It sets what each person pays so that everyone has the same amount left after the bill is paid. Because it subtracts the bill from the incomes, the incomes must be in the same money and cover the same period as the bill, such as monthly net income against monthly rent. Each result also shows what that person is Left with.

Example: rent 1,800, incomes 4,000 and 3,000
Combined income: 7,000. After the 1,800 rent, 5,200 is left, which is 2,600 each.
Person 1 pays 4,000 − 2,600 = 1,400, left with 2,600
Person 2 pays 3,000 − 2,600 = 400, left with 2,600
Together: 1,800

For comparison, Proportional split on the same incomes gives 1,028.57 (57.1%) and 771.43 (42.9%). Equal remainder asks more of the higher earner because the aim is a matching amount left over, not a matching share.

If one person earns less than the amount everyone else is left with, they pay 0 and the others cover the bill, and the calculator says so. If the bill is more than all the incomes added together, nobody can be left with an equal amount, and it tells you that instead of showing numbers.

Why the amounts always add up to the bill

Dividing a bill by income rarely lands on whole cents. The calculator rounds every amount down to the cent, then hands the leftover cents, one each, to the people whose amounts had the largest fractions. For the 1,800 rent split 4,000 to 3,000, the exact shares are 1,028.571 and 771.428, which become 1,028.57 and 771.43, and together they are exactly 1,800.00, with no stray cent.

Frequently asked questions

How to split rent based on income?

Enter the rent under Total expense and each person's income under Incomes. With the Proportional split method, each person pays rent × their income ÷ everyone's income combined, so someone earning twice as much pays twice as much. The result under Who pays what updates as you type.

How do you split bills by income percentage?

Divide each person's income by the combined income to get their percentage, then take that percentage of the bill. Rent of 1,800 with incomes of 4,000 and 2,000 gives 66.7% and 33.3%, or 1,200 and 600. The calculator shows each person's amount and their percent of the bill.

What is the formula for splitting bills based on income?

Proportional: a person's share = bill × their income ÷ total income. Equal remainder: when everyone pays, each person is left with (combined incomes − bill) ÷ number of people, and pays their income minus that amount. Both are done in whole cents, so the amounts add up to the exact bill.

How to split rent when one person makes more?

Use the Proportional split method if you want each person to cover the same share of the rent as they earn of the household income. Use Equal remainder if you would rather both of you end up with the same amount left after rent. Try both: switching Split method does not clear what you typed.

Should couples split rent based on income?

That is a personal choice, and many couples and roommates split evenly instead. The calculator only shows what each approach would mean in numbers, so you can compare an even split, a proportional split and an equal leftover before you agree on one.

Can you split utilities and other bills by income?

Yes. Put any shared bill under Total expense, such as electricity, internet or groceries, and the split works the same way as for rent. Use the same incomes for every bill if you want the shares to stay consistent.

Can I split rent by salary instead of income?

Yes, enter salaries in the Incomes fields. Gross, net or hourly all work for the Proportional split, as long as everyone's figure is the same kind. For Equal remainder, enter net income for the same period as the bill, such as monthly take-home pay against monthly rent.
